Final thoughts on the VNM handbrake and updated parts for the VNM Shifter. Out of the box, the handbrake presents as a well finished and constructed control.
It uses 8mm thick aluminum plates in most of its design. With a 10mm thick unit used in the mounting plate section. The handle is 185mm long and 35mm
diameter at its thickest area at the top. It feels good in hand due to the tapered angle used along its length. There is an angle adjustment element integrated into the travel stop section that uses a Fibroflex elastomer unit to keep the handles return quiet. The load cell used is the industry proven Mavin brand with a 100kg load limit. Resistance is provided by a selectable spring and Fibroflex elastomer stack. There are various spring rates to choose from. This stack rides on a steel rod inserted into an aluminum rod end unit sporting steel sealed bearings. The whole unit pivots on a rod seated in another set of sealed bearings. This provides the user with a very smooth pull when actioning the handbrake. With no lateral play detected. The new, updated shifter know used a conical collet system similar to those used in mills and lathes. This provides more contact surface area when tightening the knob than the old set screw design. The other update VNM sent to me was a new sequential shifter plate assembly. They added a rocker plate to the old design that actuates a spring tensioned ball bearing riding in a brass cup. There is a noticeable improvement to the tactile feedback you get when actioning the levers notches against the ball bearing. I like the improvements the VNM has made here with these updated parts. When driving the handbrake shifter combination, I felt that they complimented each other. I was able to get the handbrake tuned to my personal preference without too much trial and error. Which resulted in me feeling like the car reacted to my handbrake inputs as it should. The new sequential shifting element now provides a nice tactile click where the was non before. Overall I like what I have seen from VNM so far. They make a well thought out set of controls that have a fit and finish that are among the best I have used.
